Composer Lucy Pankhurst has won the 2011 British Composer Award in the Wind Band & Brass Band category for her original composition “In Pitch Black”, the central piece of music on the Wingates Band CD “Perspectives of Pretoria” .
She was presented with the award at a prestigious event held in London this week at the Stationers Hall sponsored by the Performing Rights Society in association with BBC Radio 3.
The CD commemorates the tragic pit disaster at the Pretoria Pit in 1910 when 344 men and boys, including members of the band were killed in a massive explosion and it was brought out on the centenary of the disaster.
Copies of the CD may be purchased from Wingates Band at www.wingatesband.co.uk or from our On-Line shop.
